Chicago Tournament June 26-27, 2010

So who's playing in the 16-man, double-elimination tournament in Chicago for $100? Brackets draw Wednesday according to the site. http://www.rbibaseballcotut.com/2010.html

My plans for Olympic-style RBI training have not come together. That means I will be falling back on whatever skills I honed in 1987-'89.

Could be in trouble, but it will be fun. I vow to use Houston at least once in the tournament.

$100 is steep, I'm not nearly that trusting in my abilities to wager that much.  I prefer the bowling alley type settings and betting around $10-$20, based on my one fest experience.

Some Dee-Nee members have stopped by to watch parts of the tournament in previous years, so I don't think anyone would kick you out or anything.

There's an email link toward the bottom of the page that will send a message to Mike Beales, the guy who runs the tournament, if you want to check with him to make sure, but I think as long as you're not being disruptive, they'd have no problem with additional spectators.

Right now I'm doing this 110% for Big Bell as he requested an update on the COTUT...

The first day of the 6th RBI Baseball COTUT has been pretty insane.  With only five players returning from prevoius tournaments (thanks Joe Dirt), there was alot of unknown talent heading into the tournament.  And to be honest, I think every player in this tournament proved to be one hell of an RBI player.  Even though I"ll only mention a few in this post, I'd love to see everyone back in two years.

I only got about 3 hours of sleep last night and I'm exhausted right now so I'll summarize without referring to the scorecards.

Jeff Bandur (Illinois) got off to a great start winning his first two series, but fell apart against Mark Bridges from Arkansas.  Bridges easily took the top half of the bracket, heading into day two undefeated.

The biggest story of the bottom half of the bracket was Tyler Masterson's (Illinois) upset of Mike Riley (Ohio) in their first series.  Masterson sent the favored Riley down to the consolation bracket and automatically put the bullseye on his own head for the rest of the players in the bottom half.

I won my first two best-of-three series, only allowing 1 run against me in a 1-0 bottom of the 11th loss to Robert Book (Nebraska).  I then swept Masterson 3-0, shutting him out every game, and landed a spot against Bridges when play resumes Sunday morning in the championship bracket.

Riley worked his way up through the consolation bracket, padding his series wins stats.  For some retarded reason, Masterson decided to play his Sunday morning series against Riley on Saturday night (tonight).  Masterson was losing 2-0 in that best-of-five series.  I'm assuming Riley will get his revenge and knock Masterson out of the tournament with a series victory there tonight.

That's all we have so far... Bridges and Beales remain in the championship bracket while Bandur, PJ Book, and (I'm assuming) Riley remain in the consolation bracket.

I'll update the "completed brackets" on the 2010 page (www.rbibaseballcotut.com/2010.html) after each series tomorrow.

Theres a strong possibility that Riley hasn't played RBI in 2 years.  Joe Dirt and Riley have a habit of not even getting in a practice session before the tourney.

In the loser's bracket, Bandur took PJ to 5 games but PJ wins the series with a 2-1 victory in game 5.  Bandur Ties for 5th with Masterson in the 6th COTUT.

Bridges won the winner's bracket series 3-0 over me.  I lost 1-7, 1-2, and 1-0 in that order.  Excellent series but Bridges' well rounded game just proved to be too much.

As a result, I dropped down to play Riley in the 3rd place series.
Game 1: 4-3 Beales
Game 2: 4-2 Riley
Game 3: 4-5 Riley*
Game 4: 4-2 Riley

* This game was the classic Ho vs SL matchup.  I was stuck with Houston.  I put up a 4 spot midway through the game.  Riley hacked away at that lead, with a 4-2 score heading into the bottom of the 9th.  SL gest their usual hits, load the bases, and Jack Clark is up to the plate with his team down 2-4.  I meant to walk Clark to bring up McGee for an easy strikeout or forceout to end the game.  The second pitch slips and Riley crushes it for a grand slam walk-off.... taking the series victory away from me due to my mental fuckup.  I'm literally tempted to retire from Ribbie on that note.  I've never been more devastated in my entire life.  But Kudos to Riley for sticking with his game and getting his players on base.  I finished 3rd overall.

Riley and Bridges are playing the Championship Series right now.  Best-of-Seven series tied 1-1.
