Back up, unfortunately the new RAM isn't compatible with my old RAM, so nothing was gained.  Time to get another $15 pair of sticks from EBay and shipped from China

Some form of DDR2, the key was finding 4GB sticks of the same kind.  Going from 8 to 16GB, the Hong Kong stuff doing the job - just didn't play nice with my existing 2GB sticks.  Already ordered another 8GB for $15 shipped.
