I was just thinking. For one at-bat, I wouldn't rather have anyone up than Evans. I think I'm going to dub him as the best palyer ever.

Evans is definitely one of the most clutch players in the game.  Personally, I'd prefer to have Gibson or Trammell at the plate for one at-bat.  Then again, I have the DT bias looming over my head.

For me, there is no doubt I would want Reggie Jackson at the plate...

However, if I was playing against Lips/Potsie/Sperling, Darrell Evans would be the absolute last guy I would want up....

yes, darrel evans is clutch, but not clutch enough.  chet lemon is more clutch than him (thats what i think).  jim rice is more clutch.  like gantry said, RJ is too.  i wouldnt mind evans at bat, hes a great hitter, but not the best

Alright, I agree with everything that's been said so far... but Chet Lemon!?!?  I think Lemon should be replaced with either Madlock or Sheridan if he's not producing.

My choice for best R.B.I.'er has to be Jackson.......without a doubt.  I always get hits with reggie, 50% are dingers.

Darrell Evans is the man, I think I have him ranked in the top 3 on my rankings page. Although I have Gibson ranked 1st I think I would also choose to have Evans for that one at-bat.

Jim Rice is another guy I can count on. Rice is actually leading in HR's once we have kept track. While my 1st ranked Gibson is not even in the race.

I feel Lemon has his ups and downs. When he's on, he rules, but when he's off--better sub in Bergman.
Lemon reminds me a little of Matt Nokes.
Evans, on the other hand, will hit homeruns off the end of the bat like nobody else.

I don't have the same love for Chet Lemon that most do here - I think he's an OK player, but not one I would want up with it all on the line.  I'd take Evans, Gibby, Sheridan, Whitaker or Brookens before Lemon.  But that's strictly my opnion...

Edit - After seeing vgp's post, I'd take Nokes too.  I typically bring Bergman in for the Copperpot...

I know this is COMPLETELY against conventional wisdom and quite the minority opinion, but I find that the man who produces the best for me in a tough spot is Tom Brookens.  That guy hits many big, late inning homers for me.

I don't think that's completely against conventional wisdom at all... Brookens has the big bat and normally ends up on base just as much (if not more) than the average player.

Agreed with Mike, Brookens has a very vocal contingent and he can definitely perform.  Probably the only eight hitter that shouldn't be subbed...

Very few righties are better than Brookens in my book. I even thing Brookens is more clutch than Whitaker and Nokes.

darrell evans is a thorn in my side...   he always comes up huge when i go against him...   when i am detroit, all he does is hit  into double plays...   if there was one guy on detroit who is the mark of consistancy, it would have to be madlock.

when i said chet lemon, i didnt mean overall, i simply meant in clutch positions. try him out and see for yourself, hes not as bad in later innings as most think.  brookens is the man, no question.  darrell evans is inconsistent, but he hits a hard homerun.  i also think PS is good, but not that good, not as everyone says.   yes, he gets the occasional homer and quite a few hits, but he isnt the best sub.  i would say madlock is better and heath is better at 1st or 2nd at bat, when hes powerful. after that, ps is  better. bergman is for 8th or 9th inning when your pitchers up and hes all you have.

I'll have to give good old Chet an opportunity under the heat.  I don't believe I've ever put him to the test in a clutch situation before (at least not that I can recall).

Your points on the DT subs are very creditable.  We must not forget about the power bonus on their firsts at bats.  That being said, I'm also a fan of Madlock and Heath before Sheridan and Bergman.

Darrell Evans is no doubt a devastating force to the opposing bullpen when he gets ahold of it, but when the game comes down to the line, Darrell seems to hit the showers a little early.  When I'm looking for clutch performance on Detroit I can almost always count on Gibby, Madlock, and "Fat Man" Brookens.  Chet Lemon, in my mind, is just a mini-Evans.
