Does moving up in the batter's box make the batter get to first base quicker (i.e., does it decrease the distance needed to run)?

Ryno23

I don't know, but this should be looked into.

Think of it. . . inside pitch to coleman. . . . coleman slides over to the far right side of the box. . . . . what is his time to 1b?

Good question.

I'm going to guess that it has no effect, but the RBI Gods have surprised us in the past.

I would suspect that as soon as contact is made and the screen goes to the "wide screen" view, the batter's position in the box resets to a standard spot. But, again, I'm not positive about that.

there are also folks complaining about the lack of Bobby Grich, Dwight Evans, and Willie Randolph.

If that is true, then lefties would proabably get to first base quicker too.  I would bet that none of this makes a difference though.

Let's not forget this is one of the most simple baseball games ever created.  No, position in the box and right/lefty status have nothing to do with the time it takes the batter to reach first base.

If I had to bet, I would bet you are correct, but I don't think you can make a definitive statement like that when you don't know for sure.

Another question....
Why does the catcher move around behind home plate right before the pitch is released?
Does this mean anything, or is the game just set up so he randomly moves in different places?

it appears to me that BOTH right-handed and left-handed batters start running towards first base near the top of the left-handed batters box.  although that is just from gamespeed observation.  i am positive of the lefthanded hitter starting at the top of the box becuase i played ultimate7's arcade rom (old version) with the cubs that have wierd features, like a super slow runner.

as far as the catcher moving, i have never observed any correlation to wear the catcher "sets up" before or during a pitch.  it just seems to be random.  however, i have stated on another thread that balls and strikes are called according to where the catcher catches the ball, not where the ball crosses the plate.

Right.  I know that the catcher will move after the pitch is released to adjust for where the pitch is thrown.  I was just curious as to why the catcher sets up in different spots initially.

I don't believe this to be the case.

I think I was unclear, because this IS the case.
The catcher will move to catch the ball wherever it is thrown (ie.. if it is an outside pitch, the catcher will move there to catch it.)
My question was in regards to why the catcher sets up in different places before the pitch is thrown.

All I know is that you cannot determine where the pitch is going by watching the catcher.  Believe me, I tried to figure it out like crazy when I was a yute.

I do know other stuff, really.

Me too.  That's why I was wondering.  Why would such a primative game put some code in to have a catcher randomly set up in different places?  Just for sex appeal I guess.

A constantly-running RNG is already in place. Something like randomizing the catcher's location would cost ... less than 10 bytes maybe? No idea why, but it's not like such a thing would take up half the available space.

I'm ashamed of you Gantry.

Straight pitch players lack focus, or do they focus too much?

JoeDirt

Maybe they just ask questions that go in circles
