Maybe this has been a topic in the past, but I'm not sure, so I'll start up a conversation.  As we should all know, stats can be deceiving.  Who do you think are the most underrated players in the game?

I'll start by naming Vince Colemen, who is bar none the fastest player in the game and a lock to reach second base (after a stolen base) after a slap hit to the left side of the infield.  He's a pest.

Mookie Wilson and Lenny Dykstra are similar players whose style I like, but they aren't quite as fleet of foot.

Discuss.

Stock

I would say that he is neither under or overrated.  I think his speed is great, but I think most people know that.  From a power standpoint, he is terrible though.  He is a great player to have in "anything goes" type ball, but I always take him and Ozzie out of the line-up in str8 pitch to maximize the team's power.

I think Boggs might be the most underrated player in the game.  This is solely based on the fact that most people take him out.  He is clearly overshadowed by all the power on Bo, but I always do very well with him.  He definitely has enough pop to consistently hit 1-2 homers per str8 pitch game.

I said it once and I'll say it again - stock is smart

#2
Dick Schofield - I get almost as many dingers out of him as Potatos (or "Pomme De Terre" as they call him in France).

Agreed.  I forgot about him.  He is another guy that seems to be overshadowed by that great line-up.

Obviously, my views are skewed, as I ONLY play anything goes-style baseball.  In this type of game, speed is definitely a commodity.

And good call on Boggs... his power is underacknowledged and me makes great contact (another great commodity in anything goes).

Tom Brookens - his numbers look like shit, but he has a ton of power buried behind that  lustrous moustache.

Bob Brenly. A clutch hitter who always delivers for me when I need a key base hit.

there are also folks complaining about the lack of Bobby Grich, Dwight Evans, and Willie Randolph.

i second the schofield and brenly nominations.  i never noticed these guy's abilities until i came to this site.  its easy to get caught up in the game's stats they show on the screen or or your own personal recollection of what the real player did in mlb, but it's important to acknowledge the attributes given by the RBI gods.  i have seen the light.  and gantry will certainly add spillman.

Maybe you don't give Brenly the love and support he needs to perform for you. fknmcslavedriver...

Grelts

I would have to go with Davy Lopes.  Pinch hit him for Reynolds when playing as the Astros, and he's a great asset to the bottom of the lineup.  With his power (despite lagging stats) and his speed, I think he would have to rate on the list.

Grelts, check out the data for Houston.  Reynolds, despite the shitty looking numbers, is actually the 2nd biggest power hitter in Houston's starting lineup.  I'd definitely recommend giving him a shot when using Houston.

I think it's more of a personally vendetta against Reynolds on my part.  I understand that he comes highly touted by some.  He's really let me down other times.  Certainly there are other places in the lineup that are Lopes appropriate.  Comments from Reynolds aside, I think Lopes doesn't get the respect.

I just played a game as SF today.  Grelts gave up two runs late in a tie game (worthless) but Spillman hit a game tying, two-run single and Alderte put me ahead (I later won).  All have been mentioned in this thread.  Amazing.  Though not really.

I forgot to mention this when I saw it, but there was a blank morris game used batting practice jersey on ebay a week or two ago.  It didn't even go that high.

Also, if it weren't for the Willie Cardinal autograph in it, I'd probably send you my blank morris book.  You're the only one who ever gives him any credit.

Baines

Giving RBI'ers positive love and support is an often overlooked p[art of the game.  This is most true with "Sweet Lou Whitaker.

Baines may have hit a homer with Baines, yelled Baines and immediately changed into a Baines jersey.

You know who's the best? Baines...

I play mostly straight pitch and even though he is highly touted, Da. Evans may be my most underated player, my friend always uses the Tigers and whenever they need a run Da "Fucking" Evans goes deep, its almost automatic.
What do you got there, the 4 volt? I did you a favor.
