dwight gooden was one out away from posting an rbi first... perfect game.  26 angels had come to the plate and 26 angels went down.  with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, rob wilfong was called on to pinch hit for denny corbett.. the score was 3-0 but that wasnt important.  all that stood between gooden and imortality was rob freaking wilfong.  knowing that he had nothing left in the tank, he was hoping to put one on the outside corner so that the rob would get himself out.  when asked about the location after the game, gooden said, " it was a good pitch, he just went out and got it.  Like i said earlier, i was gassed and was trying to pull it out."  Wilfong's liner to deep right center was just out of the reach of lenny.  it bounced up  against the wall for a single.  When wilfong was asked if he was worried about being blanked, he said, "we were sucking out there tonight and i didnt want to be a part of such an accomplishment.  I just stuck my bat out and got good wood on it and it fell in for a hit."  Angels manager, andrew(little brother) was not availiable for comment.

not that it matters but jesse orozco came in to slam the door earning the save.  " i just felt bad for doc, he was throwing so well.  watching from the bullpen we were all pulling for him...  when we saw that ball come of wilfong's bat our hearts sank.. if only lenny had one more step".    i cought up with dykstra to ask him about the hit.  "I just didnt get there,  i got a good jump but it was just out of my reach".   i then asked him why he didnt dive for the ball and i recieved this reply, "we can't (expletive) dive because we werent programmed to.  Don't blame me for the programmer's mistakes."

just a few more stats.   gooden  8 2/3 ip, 1 H, 9K, OBB, 0R.  orozco gave up a single before retiring decinces to end the game...  the mets duo faced two batters over the minimum.

Nice Joe, sounds like it was a great game, maybe Dykstra didn't dive because he didn't want to swallow his chew.

That will definately go into the great moments of posting category in the RBI Bible at home.

That is very impressive considering my recent foray into curve pitch.  I don't think any starter was good after the 6th for us.  To go three more innings would have been tough...

congrats.

I pitched an 11 inning no-no against one of the more formidable Texas RBI competitors, Doo Doo Brown, about a year ago.  it was also with the Mets...however, i used a combination of the Dr., Bobby O and Jessie Orosco.  I did issue one unintentional/intentional walk in the late innings.

this game marks the only "true" no-no thrown at casa del 1614 (Texas League RBI headquarters).  a black and white photograph rests on top of the 36 inch HDTV to commerate the wonderful occasion.  we are considering putting a plaque on the couch.

on a related note, JFreed (AKA Russell Cox) and I had one of the more "epic" games ever played at 1614 last night.  Doyle Alexander has his best outing in a loooooong time, striking out 10 of the first 12 batters he faced.  he was pulled in the 6th (after going 5 2/3 innings of no hit ball).  unfortunately, in the 6th, Jack Morris left a pitch on the inside of the plate that Jeff Leonard hit into the left/center field grandstand.  it was SF's only hit of the game, but it was good enough for the victory as the Giants triumphed 1-0 ***.

***with the count at 2-2, an apparent dinger off of the bat of Bill Madlock in the top of the 8th was curiously ruled foul by the 3rd base ump.  although both competitors and the single RBI spectator believed the ball flew past the "fair" side of the foul pole, the 3B ump seemed to have a different view.  the at bat was not a complete wash for Bill "umpire abuser" Madlock, as he watched ball 4 go by before trotting down to 1st base.

pitching and defense...pitching and defense.

i think the problem with the first and third base umpires judging flyballs down the line is that they are cross-eyed, it is the only way to explain their horrific calls.

A combination no-hitter is the only way I"m going to get one.  No starter I have played with can keep the hitters guessing after the 6th inning.  My guess is that the first one will be against Potsie, he strikes out a whole bunch in curve.  Actually, he strikes out way too much in straight pitch too...

Roger Clemens threw a 1-hitter for me against Potsie.  He wasn't blazing in the 9th, but wasn't throwing slop either.  The key is to get outs early in the count...

that was how i came close with doc...  get the batters to get themselves out early in the count.  gooden was throwing decent until the 8th, after which he was basically throwing slop and managed to get 5 outs... too bad that wilfong had to blow it for him.

Outstanding post, Gwynn.  Nice touch with the postgame interviews.

My brother, too, came within an out of a no-hitter (not a perfect game like yours)

He was playing with Detroit against me.  I was playing, guess who?   The Angels!

He was getting it done by committee, and in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, the room was silent.    Alexander was pitching and Pettis was at the plate.  Pettis hit a long fly ball to right, and the RF (Chet Lemon?) backed up to the wall.  The ballwas JUST over his head, bouncing off the wall and into his mitt.
Pettis motored into second base and my brother screamed in horror
It was one of the greatest moments in our personal RBI history.
I'm sure Lemon would have responded the same way Dysktra did: "We're not F'IN programmed to F'N JUMP!!"

Strassy threw a perfect game against me once.  I believe I reported this already.  I was baked off of a weed brownie and I don't think I really knew what was going on at the time.

i am in shock that this thread has existed for over three years, and no one ever corrected this "denny corbett" nonsense.  HIS NAME WAS SHERMAN.

and yes, I did throw a perfecto against Nacho.  He sucks.
