Gantry and I were texting on Saturday and he mentioned the idea of the two of us doing 24 hours of RBI for charity.  The tentative date is July 11th.  We will be much better rested and in better environs (his place or mine, I assume his since it is world RBI headquarters, but who knows), but we are old as hell.  Let's see what we can do!

Why not roll this into the fest?

there are also folks complaining about the lack of Bobby Grich, Dwight Evans, and Willie Randolph.

Gantry

I'm not totally against that though I think it would have more "impact" as a two person feat.  Because there's no way just me and Tempo will play for 24 hours at a fest, too much going on.

That said, I'm fine with shifts, having everyone play for a few hours and keeping RBI rolling for 24 hours straight.  Beauty of that is more people would be involved and can spread the word and hopefully get to the $1000 goal.

What say you Tempo?  Selfishly I'd like to pull the feat off but in terms of the charity it would make sense to do it during the fest and get everyone to raise money.

I think there is zero chance that we achieve it two-man style during the fest.  Too many distractions, as you said.

I also suspect that two people doing it will raise more money, as it sounds more impressive than a bunch of guys just playing.  People could just post "hey two guys I know are doing this for charity, donate" and I think it'd get some traction simply because it's a pretty unique event.  But I could be wrong

I think most people who donate will know us personally and really aren't too interested in how difficult the feat is.   Well they probably are interested but I don't think the degree of difficulty is the deciding factor for the bulk of people who'd donate.  If we have 12 people actively fundraising and getting personally involved, that's 6x more of a potential donor pool and $$$ to go around.

Then again, it would also be a big distraction and time suck during the fest.  Do people really want to play 3 straight hours of RBI at 4am during a fest?  Do two people want to miss the meal and two other people want to leave the bar to come back to play?   I think logistically it's probably too much to ask for during a fest and would likely devolve into drunken debauchery and people welching on their commitments.

So I'm leaning toward keeping it a two man event.  If you are going to the fest and would like to jump on board, even if it means missing certain fest events, then speak up.

Briznock

If you live stream so i can watch I'll double my donation.

Gantry

Darky

I'll donate. Where is the money going btw?

Great idea fellas.

I think this could get some reaction beyond people that we know, as it's a somewhat unique way to raise money, while also being something almost everyone can identify with (video games from their childhood)

Money will be going to charity:water - I'll get a campaign page up by the end of the week(end)

Never done before but I'm pretty sure getting it on twitch won't be too tricky.  A live stream would help out, people can watch the whole time.

To make it entertaining and get more people invested in it, make the loser donate 50 bucks or something. So it's you guys actually trying. Then we can all place bets on here with a portion going to the charity.

Strassy, are you any good?  I know Gantry is good as I've played him.  I feel that if I wager, I'm at a handicap as I'm unfamiliar with your game.  Please rate.

I would rate myself as a very strong pitcher but a mediocre hitter.  For someone who rarely plays curve pitch, Gantry is surprisingly good at it.  I know he prefers straight pitch but there's no way I can play that way for more than a couple of games.

I'm fine by that, though I intend to donate quite a bit more in any case.  What would we take bets on, overall record in the 24 hours?

We should also figure out all the various tournaments, styles, etc to play as I'm sure it'll get monotonous doing any one thing for too long.  1sp, 2sp, slurve, - if people have odd rules post them here.  I'm sure we'll try anything given how many games we'll be playing.

fknmclane

You'll need to devote 2-4 hours to each of the following:

slurve
straight pitch
curve
1sp
2sp
1rp only
tettleton

Shit like that.  Maybe a whole game with only bunting.  Stupid shit is the only way to make it happen.

I was thinking we could replay all the playoff series as well

This is gold, Jerry.  May have to try this.

Tempo - would you want to dip into the realm of emulation?  Using your power pak and playing on the original NES of course, but we could really mix it up.  Maybe a ROM of all Spike Owen vs all Al Pedrique?  If you'd rather stick to the OG that's totally fine...

Mix in some RBI 2 or 3?  That seems slightly less sacrilegious than emulation, although I was thinking that you guys weren't huge fans of the sequels.

I'd be down with that as well, though Tempo gets 51% voting rights on sequels and custom ROMs.
