First 3 are garbage, which is probably why you think the show sucks.  I think you can start with 4 and pick things up fine.

Written by the same guy that did Battlestar Galactica so I'm a bit confused as to why Manfreddy would be ripping it.

It's not like TNG was an amazing show either.  It had some good episodes and a lot of shit ones.  DS9 has a few shit episodes here and there but is overall far better than TNG.
